Welcome! This blog began as an assignment in a digital art class. That was in 2008. I decided to keep it going as my art journal. It is fascinating for me to see how a painting develops, so this is where I post my painting progressions and exciting new things I find on creative blogs and websites. I hope you will learn along with me about painting, drawing and all kinds of art.

Cool Dark Forest

I think that will be my title ...
Titles are sometimes hard to "discover",
but I was thinking about how hot the rest of the country is
and even though the sun has been out here in SE AK
for a couple of days,
it is not as warm as "down south".

Cool Dark Forest      6 x 8 inches      oil on Arches Huile paper

 On Saturday (8/5/2017) Plein Rein,
our local plein air group, 8 or 9 of us this time,
traveled out to the

CAROLE BAKER of Gustavus, AK.

(Be sure to click on that link to see Carole's fabulous works
 on her dailypaintworks site
and if interested,
the ADNR link to find out about the Artist-In-Residence program!)

The cabin's windows look out onto Lynn Canal
and the Chilkat Mountains,
a gorgeous location for an artist's cabin!

We had a perfect morning of painting and then a delicious lunch.
I must share some of the photos of the day.

Cristine Crooks' hat says "Got Art?" Love it!

Cristine's finished (or nearly finished) painting!
Beautiful! Not sure the size ... 12 x 18?

Chilkat Mts and Lynn Canal

This scene attracted me because of the dark forest shadow
and the reflections in the tannin-colored water.

I painted the rest of the painting with palette knife after this shot.

Spawned out chum salmon (Oncorhynchus keta)
right there next to where I was painting.
Not a wonderful smell ...

pencil sketch beginning
(I changed a few things as the paint covered the paper.)

Thanks so much for peeking in to my blog.
Please check back again from time to time.
I love to hear your comments!

Perfect title for your GORGEOUS painting, Teri! Your color palette is so beautiful!! I want to pitch a tent right there and stay for a good long while.
And thanks for sharing the photos (awesome bald eagle)! Love Carole Baker's work, too!!
Great post.

Teri - I would love to do an artist in residence program there ... it appears to be only artists from Alaska though? Love your painting 😀

Hi Lisa!
The residency program is not just for Alaskans. There was a woman from Atlanta, Georgia there before Siobhan and Carole! I blogged about her: Maureen Engle - on July 11 - here - http://terirobus.blogspot.com/2017/07/gruening-cabin-artist-in-residence.html
I think I have a link on that day to the artist-in-residence program, but here it is for you, too - http://dnr.alaska.gov/parks/asp/artistinresidence.htm
Yes! You should do it! I haven't applied yet. I never know when we will be traveling. Let me know if you cannot get to the site. And thanks so much for writing! Love following you on Insta and fb!
