Dear painters, art aficionados, and art explorers everywhere. I would never have guessed this journal would keep my interest for so long! Join me as I learn about the processes of painting, drawing and at times, the history of art.

This one will take awhile ... whew!
But it is fun. Several people have already guessed it.

5.30.2012

No time to paint today.
This is a sketch done as a warm-up for painting the other day.
My little figure lost her arm!
From my large sketch book - 17 x 14

Zoom In #6 Finished

After Sydney Mortimer Laurence (1865–1940), The Silent Pool

Oil on canvas, 8 x 8"
The limited palette on this Zoom In:
ultramarine blue, cadmium yellow medium, alizaron crimson, white, black.

This yellow is so orange that I could not get the lime green
that Laurence had for the mid-distance trees and the pool. And I do
not like to use pure black out of the tube, so I added the crimson or the blue
for what I hoped would be a bit of richness.

Zoom In #5 Rembrandt Finished

Zoom-In of Portrait of the Artist, 8 x 8", oil on canvas

Omg, it is amazing how you can just keep going and going on a painting
if you don't step away from the easel, and say, I'm done! ... so ...
I finally said "it is finished."
AND, appropriately - Rembrandt supposedly did utter,
"A painting is finished when the artist says it is finished."

I love comments! To do that, go HERE!

Back to it...

My Rembrandt zoom-in. Getting more paint down ...
... aaahh, feels so good to get back to my paints & brushes!

5.10.2012

Another very quick session, like 5 minutes...more in a week!

Rembrandt Zoom-In Beginning

Start of my Rembrandt zoom-in -
I actually like it just like this...oh well, we will see

Self-Portrait - my favorite artist

Rembrandt van Rijn
Portrait of the Artist, ca 1661-1669
oil on canvas, 45" x 37"
from English Heritage, The Iveagh Bequest (Kenwood)

This is my next zoom-in. Love.

5.07.2012

LPC finished

S B Pump House, oil on canvas, 12" x 12"
This was fun, however, for the fb challenge, black is suggested in the five "color" choices.
(The colors are: white, black, ultramarine blue, alizaron crimson, cadmium yellow-medium.)
I prefer to mix my own black and didn't use the tube of black at all in this piece.

On the Easel

...a bit of diversion from my Zoom-In paintings.

This is the start of another
Yes, I did have to do it ... don't most Juneau painters?
I still like "Sandy Beach" by Alexis Roberts Keiner VERY much!

check out my whole blog
will you won't you
leave a comment?
maybe someday?

Above by recently deceased New Yorker cartoonist Al Ross

This is very true! Sigh ... and today, I am not goofing off, am
moving boxes getting ready for some remodeling ... and my
studio/laundry room is packed with stuff that I have to joggle
around before there is room to paint again.

LPChallenge warm-up

Airport Windows (tentative title)
Think I am still working on this a bit.

4.26.2012

I found a group formed called Limited Palette Challenge on fb.

We can only use:
1. White
2. Black
3. Cadmium Yellow Medium
4. Ultramarine Blue
5. Alizaron Crimson

I have joined and will try some paintings!

4.25.2012

While waiting on an order of 8 x 8 canvases, which should be in my hands soon - thought I'd do a sketch of one of my photos and possibly do a painting. This particular photo was actually a reflection caught while waiting at the Austin, TX airport. I turned the photo upsidedown to sketch.
It brings to mind Mondrian.

This is my zoom-in. Who painted the original?

Please go to my
and feel free to comment!

Here is the link to a photo of the original painting. This was fun!
This is a link to a photo of the first zoom-in painting (from the 4/16/12 post).

4.17.2012

Here is the beginning of my second "zoom-in" painting.
It is a cropped portion of the painting
" _____________'s  _____  ___________"

Can you guess?

Zoom In #1

My idea to "just keep painting" (that I hear in my head every day) is to zoom in
on a famous painting and paint that little section of it.
Many people will most likely realize who the famous painter was/is,
but it will be a fun and interesting challenge for all involved!

There tis! I am finished with this series. Yahoo!
Thank you, Matt for the photos and for making the cradled birch supports!
We are a team!

3.27.2012

Goose Lake

Here's a bit of a start!
That part of a triangle you see is a shadow! Hope I can make it look like one.

Goose Lake View

First crack at this composition.
Acrylic (rust color) over the white gesso...and the dark is oil paint.

#5/6 Tie - In at Dry Creek

I love to put my paintings in b & w to see if the values are working.
There seems to be a lot of gray in this one but I think there are enough other light/dark values
to make it work ok. This is finished. I like it.

Comments?

3.22.2012

Essentially finished! Maybe just a few more blobs of paint...
Any input?

3.01.2012

Tie-In progress
