Painting a still life: "Glass with Herb"

 

Hello you good blog readers, you!

This post will be about my painting "Glass with Herb", and

I don't mean Herb Alpert  ... that is the only Herb I could

think of at this moment. (by the way, Herb A. 🎺 is 91!!!)

Here are my photos of the steps in the progress:

My surface is Yupo! 

"YUPO is a brand of synthetic, tree-free paper made from 100% polypropylene plastic. It is completely waterproof, smooth, and will not tear or buckle when wet. Because its surface is totally non-porous, inks and paints sit on top rather than absorbing, making it popular for unique effects in watercolor and alcohol ink art." ... and oil paint goes on beautifully after the underlayer, which you see here as a brownish color.

Did you guess mint? Well, it does not look like mint, but that's ok. 

I am in love with this painting - irl you can see the textures on the surface 

and I love the (purple) shadows.

This painting is in my collection, Still Life because

it isn't a flower painting, but almost!

Confection, not a sweet this time ...

 ... but a sweet painting!

This is the alstroemeria bouquet 

and initial set-up/composition that I began with

 for my painting.

My surface is a 12 x 12 inch stretched canvas. 

The following are (not many) shots of the 

painting's progress.

I really love how this painting turned out -

the flattened way the bouquet contrasts with the more modeled 3D vases,

with the dark background adding to that flatness.

It intrigued me, and I am glad I stopped when i did.

The painting is ready to hang as is, but a frame could surely be added. 

I will be adding this to my website collection "Still Life Florals" soon.

Painting (then disrupting) Alstroemeria

 Hi readers - so glad you are here! I've been wondering if I

should start doing this on my Substack, rather than this blogger thing. 

I did start a Substack when it first came out, 

but I am not really sure it is something I'm willing to commit to.

Will I need to transfer all of this blog to it? Is that possible?

Anyway, something I have been thinking about.

Today I worked on a painting that has been sitting around,

waiting for something to happen to it.

I didn't hate the painting but at this point in my art journey,

I thought it was a little boring. I took it off the shelf

and reworked it.

Here are the pictures of the process; the painting began in 2021 (!)

Began with a charcoal sketch on my canvas

I loved the way this looks with the charcoal lines,
now that I see it again after five years.

It is extremely difficult to make the blossoms
look like Alstroemeria, but I think they are ok!

This is the way the painting has been for
five years or so.

After some disruption, this is the "new" painting.

Even when I "disrupted" the blossoms,

they look pretty good, you can still tell they are Alstroemeria, 

or Peruvian Lily ... I hope!

My husband can make the frame and I finish them, 

so they can be a little bespoke (ie custom)!
